Efficacy of Carob Leaves and Pods in Reducing Cyclophosphamide-Induced Toxicity on Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Leukocytes

Cyclophosphamide is one of the chemotherapeutics for cancer, however this drug has severe side effects in multiple organs and a well-known mutagenic agent. In work protective activity antioxidant-rich Carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) pods leaves extracts against cyclophosphamide induced genotoxicity was studied. Safety these evaluated acute subacute toxicity tests at dose 1500 mg/kg/day albino rats. Both exhibited no mortality or significant changes rats' general behavior. Moreover, organ weights blood chemistry revealed toxic (p>0.05).The anti-mutagenic potential carob were using vivo bone marrow chromosomal aberration micronucleus assays vitro comet assay peripheral white cells. Results showed that rats treated with along had decrease aberrations when compared cyclophosphamide-treated (p<0.05). Pods extract also reduction cyclophosphamide-induced DNA migration There highly statistically differences means micronuclei (MNs) immature red cells between group (p<0.01).It could be concluded effect cyclophosphamide- may considered as agent after conducting more studies.
